YUNJUNG CHOI
Born in South Korea and based in Seoul, Yunjung Choi explores the perceptual and emotional resonance of light.
Trained in Western Painting at Suwon University (B.F.A. and M.F.A. coursework), her practice centers on what she describes as the aesthetic of the ephemeral—moments in which form dissolves and boundaries soften under shifting illumination.
Choi’s compositions unfold through a restrained, meditative process. Repetitive brushwork dissolves the binary of light and shadow, giving way to atmospheric fields that resist fixed definition. Rather than depicting space, she constructs it—layering luminosity, air, and subtle movement to create works that remain open, inviting projection and introspection.
Her earlier Illusion series examined the transient distortions of light; her ongoing Glow series distills this inquiry further, arriving at a quieter, more essential state. Working on raw linen, Choi allows light to permeate the surface, producing a sense of depth and interior radiance that is both optical and psychological.
Recipient of the Grand Prize at the Na Hye-seok Fine Art Exhibition (2014), Choi has presented eight solo exhibitions and participated in over 40 group exhibitions. Her work is held in institutional collections including the MMCA Art Bank and the Seoul Museum of History, and is increasingly sought after by international collectors. She is exclusively represented by Avant Gallery.
